In a few months, the district will regain its influence on Fort Sokolnicki. In April, the lease of the building in Fort Sokolnicki ends, and in the district they are already thinking how to develop the monument. They would like to set up a branch of the community center there. It is possible, however, that the fort will need renovation.
There are the Komedia theater, the Wisła cinema, city libraries and private café clubs. However, Żoliborz did not live to see a real community center that liked to emphasize its intelligence. The district maintains that it wants to arrange it at 21 Śmiała Street, but – as we learn – Fort Sokolnicki will be part of this community center, the lease of which to a private entity is coming to an end after ten years. The idea is that in the building on Śmiała Street acquired last year from Veola it will be the headquarters and daily activities will be organized, but for larger performances or concerts a historic fort, renovated several years ago, would be more suitable.
– There is no community center yet. There is a draft of it, which is at the stage of a resolution of the Żoliborz district council and will be processed at the city council meeting. The next stage will be the selection of the director of the community center. We have actually been working on this project for a long time. The city was involved in, among others, vice-president Aldona Machnowska-Góra – says tvnwarszawa.pl, mayor of Żoliborz Paweł Michalec.
And he admits that one of the elements of this institution will be Fort Sokolnicki in Żeromski Park. – The tenant is there until April 2022 and we will not terminate the contract earlier. When it expires, we will make directional decisions to create a community center in Żoliborz, declares the mayor. – If it weren’t for the pandemic and some processes that arose in connection with it, including problems related to finances, the community center would probably have been established. But these are things independent of the city and that is why this process was so delayed, now it is gaining momentum – he explains.
The condition of the fort? “Let the experts speak about it”
In July, “Gazeta Stołeczna” informed that the historic fort in Żeromski Park was deteriorating. Councilors were concerned that last winter it was unused due to the ban on organizing events during the pandemic, and due to the lack of heating, moisture had forced its way into the old walls. They tried to organize an on-site inspection in the fort, to no avail. – Our intervention was aimed at drawing attention to the municipal property, which, after being leased into private hands, deteriorates, but the local government will have to bear the costs of its renovation – Marta Szczepańska from the association Miasto Jest Nasz, Żoliborska councilor and chairman of the culture committee .
We ask the mayor about it. He claims that the councilors managed to enter the fort recently. “As for the condition of the fort, I can’t say it’s all right and we’re happy.” I also do not want to judge by saying that it is good or that it is bad. Let the experts speak about it. In April, there will be an inspection, then an acceptance protocol will be drawn up and the technical condition will be one of the elements that will be assessed then – sums up Michalec.
