Szczepan is the first child born in 2025 in Warsaw. City Hall data shows that over 28,500 children were born in the capital last year. This is less than two and three years ago.

The city hall announced on Friday that the first Warsaw resident was born in 2025 at the Specialist Hospital. Saint Families on MadaliÅ„skiego Street. The baby was delivered on January 1 at 12:01 am. The boy is the third child of Mrs. Marta and Mr. Zbigniew. The parents were visited in the hospital by the Mayor of Warsaw, RafaÅ‚ Trzaskowski. – To be born one minute after midnight is really good timing. I am very glad that Szczepan was born strong, healthy and will be able to join his siblings – he congratulated his parents.

The number of births in Warsaw is falling

According to officials, demographic indicators are currently pessimistic. Last year, 28,647 children were born in the capital. In 2023, 29,249 births were registered, and in 2022 – 31,950.

The city hall reports that in the new year, 11 children were born in the hospital at MadaliÅ„skiego Street, and last year 3,590. Statistics are also published by another municipal facility. “In 2024, we received 5,877 deliveries at St. Sophia Hospital in Warsaw – that's 401 more than in 2023! And everything indicates that most babies in Poland were born here,” hospital representatives said on Facebook.

Let us remind you that maternity wards are also located in other municipal facilities: Southern Hospital, Bielański Hospital, Praski Hospital and the Warsaw Institute of Women's Health on Inflancka Street.

Support for families in the capital

The city has been financing the “Childbirth School” education program for 20 years. Partners of pregnant women or accompanying persons may take part in the classes. In 2024, 6.5 thousand Warsaw residents took advantage of it.

Currently, the city is preparing a new program for the prevention and early diagnosis of postpartum depression. “It is a special type of mood disorder that affects more and more women during pregnancy and in the period after the birth of a child. The budget of the program in the 2025-2027 edition is PLN 6 million. 36,000 women will be covered by early diagnosis of postpartum depression. The program will soon be an agenda item for city councilors.” – we read in the announcement.

Last year, four new municipal nurseries were opened in the capital. “Recruitment for a new nursery in Wola will begin soon, and after the holidays, children from Bemowo will use the new kindergarten,” officials inform.

So far, Warsaw has been running a municipal in vitro funding program. Thanks to it, over 2,700 children were born and over 10,000 couples benefited from it. The city spent PLN 59 million on it. The program has been implemented by the government since the middle of last year.
