Warsaw received 142,000 votes in the “European Best Destination 2023” competition, which allowed it to win the competition. The organizers announced on Friday the results of the three-week competition in which 21 European cities participated. Warsaw defeated, among others, Athens, Vienna, Prague, Copenhagen or Maribor.

– We have it! We have the interest of the whole world in our city. Warsaw is worth it! A city so modern, dynamically developing, with an extraordinary history. The capital of greenery, comfort and free time. A city of contrasts where everyone will find balance. A city where a few kilometers from the modern, lively New Center of Warsaw and right next to the historic Old Town, the Vistula, a truly wild river, meanders among the greenery. Such things only in Warsaw! – says the mayor of the capital, Rafał Trzaskowski, quoted in the communiqué of the city hall. And he assures that the title of “European Best Destination 2023” is not only prestige. – Winners from previous years recorded a dozen or so percent increase in the number of tourists – he notes.

The best result in the history of the competition

According to the City Hall, residents of 178 countries cast 686,000 votes in the competition. 48 percent of them came from Europe, the rest from other continents. Warsaw received 142,081 votes. The capital of Poland outpaced Athens, which received 91,000 votes. Also in the top five are: Maribor, Vienna and Cittadela.

As calculated, Warsaw also received the most votes in the history of the competition. So far, Porto has won the most votes in 2017, with 138,000 votes.

Turn winnings into long-term success

The experience of previous winning cities, such as Wrocław, Porto or Ljubljana, shows that each win translates into measurable benefits. “The world’s largest industry media write about it, and tourists from all over the world are starting to plan their visits to them. The winners from previous years recorded a dozen or so percent increase in tourist traffic. And in the case of Zagreb – which won in the Best Christmas Market category for three years in a row – the increase was as much as 41 percent. – we read in the message.

Therefore, the director of the Warsaw Tourist Office, Paweł Moras, emphasizes that now it is important to “turn the victory into a long-term success”.

Culture, gastronomy, safety

The title of “European Best Destination 2023” was determined by the result of an online vote. But Warsaw was also appreciated and awarded by the organizer in four additional categories: Best Cultural Destination (capital of culture), Best Destination for Food Lovers (capital of good taste), Safest Destinations in Europe (capital of safety), Best Destinations for a city break (the place for a short trip). – These awards confirm the attractiveness of our city and the diversity of the offer that awaits tourists here – adds Paweł Moras.
