Zofia Czekalska, nickname “Sosenka”, died at the age of 100. The mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, announced the death of a participant of the Warsaw Uprising on social media.

The mayor of Warsaw's entry about Czekalska's death appeared on Tuesday evening.

“Just a great person”

“You're getting younger and younger!” I said every time we met. And it wasn't an official courtesy. Because anyone could envy her the energy and enthusiasm she always had (I certainly did). Because every time she had an infectious smile that almost never left her face,” wrote Rafał Trzaskowski.

He added that the last time he saw Czekalska was at the Easter meeting at the Warsaw Insurgents' House.

“Unfortunately, there will be no more meetings. I thank you for each of those that I had the honor to experience. Zofia Czekalska “Sosenka” – an insurgent, a heroine and a simply wonderful person – passed away at the age of 100. Mrs. Zofia, “Sosenko” – thank you for everything. Warsaw will always remember you,” assured the mayor of the capital.

Paramedic and liaison

As we read on the website of the Warsaw Uprising Museum, Zofia Czekalska was born on July 6 in 1923 in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, née Sosnowska. – This is why [gdy] During the Uprising, they asked me what nickname I wanted, I said: “I don't know… Sosenka?” That's how I became “Sosenka”. The whole street called me “Sosenka” – she talked about her fate.

When the war broke out, she was 16 years old.

During the Warsaw Uprising, she was a liaison of the Central Pharmacy Store of the western section. Later she became a liaison nurse.
