Many residents of Washington, D.C., in the United States, woke up on Friday to noises coming from household garbage cans. The cause of the commotion was a young black bear looking for food in them. The capture of the intruder ended a few kilometers from the White House.

Young black bear (Ursus americanus) took its toll on the residents of one of Washington’s districts in the United States. The animal was spotted on Friday morning wandering around the neighborhood’s backyards and rummaging through garbage cans in search of something to eat. The relevant authorities were immediately informed.

The bear was walking in the Brookland area, less than five miles from the White House. As reported by the Associated Press, due to the location, it was necessary to form a kind of “bear task force”, which included representatives of the local police, the Human Rescue Alliance, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the local zoo.

Franklin or Smokey?

The animal was caught only when it climbed a tree. The police had to use the alarms to discourage him from going down so the crews had time to prepare.

Photos of the bear and reports of its capture quickly circulated on social media. There was even an online discussion on what the animal should be called. Two opportunities were the most successful – Franklin, from the street where the fugitive was finally captured, and Smokey – to celebrate the iconic cartoon bear and mascot of the United States Forest Service.
