A landslide has trapped a dozen hikers near Mount St. Helens, Washington. Waves of mud swept away the bridge on the state road, blocking the only exit from the area. A helicopter was sent to rescue the prisoners.

On Sunday around 9 pm (in Poland it was then 3 am on Monday) in the vicinity of the Mount St. Helens, Washington suffered a landslide. Waves of mud washed over State Route 504, completely blocking traffic and washing away the Coldwater Creek bridge. In this way, the only exit route from this area was destroyed.

12 people and a dog

In the vicinity of Mount St. Helens was then home to a dozen or so tourists, unable to leave, they had to spend the night in the mountains. In the morning, a helicopter was sent to the rescue, which transported them to safety.

“We managed to save 12 people and a dog,” the King County Air Support Unit that took part in the operation said on social media.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said State Route 504 will remain closed until the roadway is repaired. Officers are at the scene assessing the extent of the damage.
