A resident of Przylasek Rusiecki in the Nowa Huta district of Kraków was attacked by a swarm of wasps. The situation was so serious that an emergency medical service helicopter landed on the spot.

According to the firefighters, the intervention took place on Friday evening, before 9 p.m. The injured person is a resident of Tarasowa Street, on whose property the wasps had settled.

“Our firefighters took care of eliminating the nest located in the ground under a box tree,” firefighters from OSP Przylasek Rusiecki reported on social media. Also on site were teams from OSP Wyciąże and Wolica, as well as JRG No. 4 in Kraków.

As reported by volunteers from Wyciąże, an LPR helicopter landed on the spot, but after the rescuers provided help, the injured person was allowed to remain at home.

“Our task included lighting the swarm site and securing the LPR helicopter landing site,” the firefighters reported.

When firefighters can remove a nest

As reported by the State Fire Service at the end of July, this month firefighters received as many as 16,971 reports regarding the removal of nests or swarms, which is over 8,300 more reports than in the same period of 2023, when 8,594 such interventions were recorded – we read in the release. The largest number of reports came from the Silesian (6,271), Podkarpackie (4,048), Mazowieckie (3,845), Małopolskie (2,761) and Wielkopolskie (2,620) provinces.

The State Fire Service reminds that firefighters intervene “in situations of direct threat to health or life, especially for people with limited mobility, from public utility buildings and educational institutions”. In other situations, the actions of the fire department should be limited to securing the area for evacuation of people from the facility and handing over the area of ​​operations to the owner or manager with a recommendation to ensure safe use of the facility.
