The owners of the library in Suffolk County in the United States are counting the losses caused by the flood. According to initial estimates, the water that quickly flooded the building caused losses of about $10 million.
The flooding in Suffolk County, located on Long Island, New York, was the result of intense stormwhich hit these areas in the second half of August. Local media wrote at the time about a historic and “thousand-year storm” that brought record rainfall to these areas.
Extreme weather conditions caused a flood that submerged the lower floor of one of the buildings at The Smithtown Library. The wave quickly entered the facility, causing massive damage. The moment of the disaster was recorded by surveillance cameras.

Million-dollar losses
Thousands of books and many computers were completely destroyed. The building also housed the valuable Richard H. Handley collection, including documents signed by Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States.
Water also damaged the library's walls, windows, and doors. American media report total losses at around $10 million.
Suffolk County and New York City have declared a state of emergency, which will allow for federal aid. According to Reuters, it could take years to fully rebuild the facility. The flooded Smithtown Library building has been closed until further notice. There are four branches of the library on Long Island.
