The Austrian capital was hit by heavy storms with hail and heavy rain on Saturday afternoon and evening. One person was seriously injured, the emergency services and media reported.
In the northern part of the city, more than 110 liters of rain fell per square meter. This is the highest summer value in the 152-year history of measurements, ORF television reported.
At one of the stops, a 35-year-old woman was pushed under a stationary bus by the water. Rescue services pulled her out from under the bus after lifting the vehicle. The woman was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Roads, railways and trams were flooded, among other places. Photos published by Austrian media show streets full of water and half-submerged cars.
Difficulties at the airport
The storm disrupted not only public transport but also the operation of Vienna-Schwechat Airport. One flight was canceled and another 39 were significantly delayed.
Thunderstorms with heavy rain are also possible in Austria on Sunday. Warnings issued by the meteorological services are in force for almost the entire country.
