The summer storm season has begun

The violent hailstorm was commented on by tvnmeteo.pl forecaster Arleta Unton-Pyziołek on TVN24. As she said, Monday and also Sunday's violent weather phenomena, including a tornado in Western Pomerania, “the summer storm season has begun.” She noted that these were “typical summer” phenomena.

– They were brought by a situation typical for this time of year: a summer, blurry low that has located itself over western Europe and is bringing warm, mild air to us from the south. This is a difficult situation because storm lines form in such lowlands, she explained.

“We had a situation that resembles downpours in the mountains”

– We treat such storm lines and storms in the same way as we deal with tornadoes. In fact, we are able to say 30 minutes in advance how violent the phenomenon will be, but it is impossible to say exactly in which part of the city this threat and the downpour will be the strongest – pointed out Unton-Pyziołek.

As she said, “in Gniezno we had a situation that was somewhat reminiscent of downpours in the mountains.” She explained that storm cells develop in a similar way in mountainous areas, giving short-term downpours that last about thirty minutes and bring rainfall of 40-50 liters of water per square meter. – In Gniezno we have a lot of concreted area on which water flows. Water accumulates in urban depressions. Just as it happens in the mountains, where during a flash flood, streams suddenly turn into a rushing stream destroying everything within 30 minutes, the same thing happens in the city – she explained.

– We have started a typical summer situation, with short-lived but very dangerous storms – added the tvnmeteo.pl forecaster.
