The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management warns against an increase in fire risk in forests at the weekend due to the heat. The risk of a fire breaking out in the west of the country is expected to be extremely high on Saturday.

A heat wave will hit Poland on Saturday. The temperature in almost the whole country will exceed 30 degrees Celsius. It will be the hottest in the western regions, where thermometers will show up to 36 degrees Celsius. Forecasters of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued second and first degree heat alerts.

Fire risk ‘rises sharply’

IMGW warns against the high risk of forest fires. “Due to the forecast high temperatures above 30 degrees, the risk of forest fires will increase sharply this weekend,” we read on Twitter.

On Saturday afternoon, the threat described as extreme and very high is forecast in many places in the western half of the country. It is to be high in a large area of ​​Poland. The lowest risk of fire outbreak in forest areas is expected in the south-eastern part of the country, and partly in the north-east.

The forest fire hazard forecast is generated 24- and 48-hours in advance from March 1 to October 31. Calculations are made on the basis of data obtained from the WRF METEOPG model with a spatial resolution of 2.5 kilometers – explains IMGW.
