It has turned wintertime in the south of Poland. Snow has fallen in the Tatras, the trails are icy. Visibility is limited and it is foggy in the higher parts of the mountains. Biało became also in the Beskids, and even five degrees of frost were recorded in the Bieszczady Mountains.
As announced by weather forecasters, a trace amount of snow fell on Tuesday night in Zakopane, creating a veil on the leaves that have not yet fallen from the trees. According to weather forecasters, it does not herald the imminent arrival of winter, because at the end of October, the heat will return to the Tatra Mountains.
On Wednesday morning, five degrees of frost were recorded at Kasprowy Wierch. There are four centimeters of snow on the top.
There are unfavorable conditions for tourism in the Tatras. There is snow and icing in places on the trails. An additional difficulty in the ridge parts is the low cloud ceiling, which limits visibility and makes orientation in the field difficult, which may cause people to go wrong, informs the Tatra National Park. Trips to higher parts of the mountains are not recommended.
– Limited visibility, heavy fog, slippery, trails icy. There is not much snow, but these are very demanding conditions – said Edward Lichota from TOPR in an interview with TVN24.
Weather in the Bieszczady Mountains
In Bieszczady, on Wednesday morning, thermometers in Ustrzyki Górne showed five degrees of frost, and in Cisna one degree Celsius below zero.
– It is windy and cloudy everywhere. So far, no snow has been recorded, but in the mountains you should always take into account a sudden break in the weather – said Paweł Szopa, the lifeguard on duty from the Bieszczady group of Mountain Rescue Service. As he noted, “the prevailing weather is not conducive to mountain hiking”. – Despite this, the tourist traffic is high – added the lifeguard on duty.
Szopa emphasized that when going to the mountains, tourists “should always have a charged mobile phone” and the “Rescue” application installed in it. “Thanks to this application, we can reach the victims easier and faster” – he noted.
Beskids. Very limited visibility
In the Beskids, the mountainous parts of the Beskids have turned white. About 1 cm of snow fell. It will melt soon, but the mountains are slippery. The conditions on the trails are difficult. There may be icing on them – said Michał Madejski, the lifeguard on duty of the Beskidzka Group of GOPR on Wednesday.
– On Wednesday morning, the GOPR stations at Hala Miziowa and Markowe Szczawiny reported that the temperatures had dropped below zero. It was -1, -2 degrees. Visibility was very limited. In the higher parts, the trails are white, there is a centimeter of snow. There may already be some icing on them. The conditions should be considered difficult – said Madejski.
