The elections to the European Parliament are approaching. However, the number of seats is limited and the lists of Law and Justice are getting crowded. According to unofficial information, Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik are to run, but also Przemysław Czarnek, Ryszard Terlecki, Marek Kuchciński and Daniel Obajtek.
By losing their seats in the Sejm, they also lost their immunities. Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik are no longer MPs, but they may soon become MEPs. The government majority is talking about escape, assessing the latest unofficial information that both former ministers convicted of exceeding their powers want to be on PiS’s lists for the European Parliament. During this time, they may have several important matters to clarify in Poland.
– (Kamiński and Wąsik – editor’s note) may, however, be a constant subject of interest for the new prosecutor’s office – says Michał Szczerba, MP from the Civic Coalition. – They only care about immunity – he adds.
Mariusz Kamiński would be number one on the PiS list from Lublin, and Maciej Wąsik – from Radom or the Warsaw district. The final decision is to be made by President Jarosław Kaczyński. – The European Parliament is not, and I want to say this clearly to my colleagues from PiS, a shelter for criminals – comments Marcin Bosacki, MP from the Civic Coalition.
Kamiński and Wąsik were convicted in a final judgment, and their mandates as Polish MPs expired. Both were sent to prison, but were pardoned by the president. Thus, their sentences were erased, so they can run in the European elections.
– They are excellent candidates for possible MEPs – says Law and Justice MP Marek Ast, but adds that no final decisions have been made in PiS yet.
The former prime minister and current MEP repeats the same thing, but Beata Szydło contradicts herself because she admits that she is already a candidate. – Right now I will be running for the European Parliament – said Szydło on Radio Zet.
The list of names grows longer
Kamiński and Wąsik are not the only names that are already very loud on the political market of PiS candidates for Brussels. There is even talk of a real exodus of famous party activists. Małgorzata Gosiewska is to be the first candidate in Warsaw, Ryszard Terlecki, Przemysław Czarnek, Marek Kuchciński and Zbigniew Ziobro are also to run.
– This will certainly not stop the Polish services from investigating the truth and looking for answers to questions – assures Urszula Pasławska, an MP from Third Way.
The real surprise will be PiS’s candidacy in Podkarpacie, because one of the leaders there is to be Daniel Obajtek, who is leaving Orlen. – I’ll calm everyone down. What Obajtek did in Poland will be accounted for, will be checked and no European Parliament will protect him – declares Agnieszka Pomaska, MP from the Civic Platform.
Escaping is one thing – says the new government, but another – it is a financial haven for the lean years in the opposition. – The sudden love of Law and Justice politicians for the European Parliament can only be explained by the desire to wait it out and protect their interests – says Daria Gosek-Popiołek, an MP from the Left.
The European elections will take place on June 9.
