The time change to winter is ahead of us. An hour ahead or an hour back? These questions always appear in spring and autumn, that is, when time is shifted. We advise when and how to change the watches.
● The time change takes place twice a year – in March and October.
● Daylight saving time is being introduced in about 70 countries around the world.
● When will we stop switching between winter and summer time? EU work has been standing still since 2019. So it is not known if and when the end will come.
When does the time change?
In Poland, time change is regulated by regulation of the Prime Minister. The last such regulation was issued on November 3, 2016 and set the dates for changing the time in 2017-2021.
The time change from winter to summer time takes place on the last Sunday in March. Then we switch the watch from two to three o’clock, which is one hour ahead. Which means many people will sleep less that day.
The change from summer to winter time takes place on the last Sunday in October. Then we switch the watches from three o’clock to two o’clock, which is an hour back. This means that most people will enjoy more sleep that day.
Daylight saving time 2021
In 2021, the change from winter to summer time took place on March 28 (i.e. on the night of March 27 to 28). When do we shift from summer to winter time? October 31 (that is, on the night of October 30-31). Remember that the hands of the clocks are moved backwards.
Most devices will change the time to winter automatically (e.g. clocks in mobile phones), but remember to switch watches that do not use e.g. radio or GPS signal. They are often found in household appliances or classic watches. Clocks in older car models may also require manual time change.
Changing the time to winter is also related to, inter alia, with interruptions in the operation of electronic banking (banks inform about such a situation in advance) or with modifications to timetables, e.g. trains.
Time change in Poland
The first time change in Poland was introduced in the period between the First and Second World War. In the decades that followed, it was introduced and abolished. Ultimately, the time adjustment has been in force since 1977 until today.
Time shifting is a worldwide practice. The distinction between summer and winter time is valid in around 70 countries. Interestingly, in Russia from 2014 only winter time applies.
When is the end of the time shift?
In March 2019 European parliament he was in favor of a draft regulation that would counteract the change of time in the European Union. According to this draft, the last time change was to take place in 2019, but this date was postponed to 2021. However, work on the changes has been at a standstill since 2019, so it is difficult to say whether they will ever actually come into force.
In 2018 European Commission carried out a public consultation among European Union citizens, stakeholders and Member States on the clock change. Of the 4.6 million responses, 84 percent wanted to abolish the time shift and 16 percent. wanted to keep the biannual time change.
Time change and health
The time shift for years has caused a stir. – In general, such a sudden change is not good – said Michał Skalski, Ph.D. from the Sleep Disorder Treatment Clinic at the Psychiatric Clinic of the Medical University of Warsaw in 2019, on TVN24.
He also said that the body’s adaptation to a new time depends on individual predispositions. However, it may take up to two weeks.
