Hate speech doesn’t come out of nowhere. Hate speech is created by people. It starts with a simple difference of views, said Professor Jerzy Zajadło, a lawyer and philosopher of law from the University of Gdańsk, in “Fakty po Faktach”. He discussed the language of hate in politics with Professor Tomasz Nałęcz, a historian and former advisor to President Bronisław Komorowski. Nałęcz assessed that “it is even worse than four years ago”, and everything indicates that this year will be worse, because there is an election campaign.

It’s gone on Friday four years since the death of the mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz. A local government official was attacked during the 27th Final of the Great Orchestra of Christmas. Referring to this, Professor Tomasz Nałęcz, historian, former advisor to the president Bronislaw Komorowski and Professor Jerzy Zajadło, a lawyer and philosopher of law from the University of Gdańsk, discussed on Saturday in “Fakty po Faktach” about the language of hate in politics.

Nałęcz: Politics uses effective tools

Nałęcz assessed that “it is even worse than four years ago”. And the worst thing is what he said Donald Tusk (…) – if hate speech is practiced by the state. And unfortunately, in Poland we have a case where this is an obligatory discourse in the conversation of the ruling party with all those who do not agree with it – he said.

– The state apparatus is used for this, ministers from the Sejm rostrum. In my parliamentary times, it would seem that these were bad times, bad, they were widely criticized, but for a minister to speak in such language from the rostrum, it was completely out of the question, he added.

“Unfortunately, the situation is terrible and everything indicates that this year will be even worse than in previous years, because there is an election campaign,” Nałęcz assessed.

When asked why and to whom it pays to brutalize the language of public debate, he said that “in politics, effective tools are used”. – If a politician sees that his behavior is ineffective, he resigns. This political course has corrupted a large part of us. – It’s a spiral that leads in a very bad direction. It will be very difficult to turn back from this path. I hope if PIS If he is removed from power, we will all stand on our heads to first eradicate it from ourselves, and then try to eliminate it from the public space, he assessed.

“Hate speech doesn’t come out of nowhere”

Professor Zajadło assessed that “this is a certain way of exercising power, a certain philosophy of politics that is characteristic of this power”. – This can also be seen in the behavior of the head of the ruling party (Jarosław Kaczyński). At meetings with voters, he makes rude jokes, for example about the circles LGBTwhich, of course, are not ostensibly hate speech, but he does it completely consciously, he puts this spark on a powder keg, because these social emotions are so quivering – he said.

– This is a way of exercising power, in my opinion. This power is based on conflict management. The deeper this conflict is, the more this power will escalate such actions, he assessed.

– Hate speech does not arise out of nowhere. Hate speech is created by people. It starts with a simple difference of views, then there is reluctance, this reluctance turns into more and more acts of aggression, and finally it comes to hate speech, and the end of this drama is an event such as the murder of President Adamowicz in Gdańsk, he said.

He added that “this is a consciously fueled mechanism.”
