A new variant of the coronavirus has been detected in Colombia. A new strain in this country is responsible for nearly 40 percent of infections. According to the GISAID database that collects global data on the genome of the coronavirus, which the WHO refers to, the first cases of infection with the new strain were also reported in Germany, France, Spain, Slovakia, and Poland.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday that it is monitoring a new coronavirus variant called Mu or B.1.621. The new strain was first detected in Colombia, where it is now responsible for nearly 40 percent of infections. In Ecuador, infection was confirmed in 13 percent of new cases.

WHO reports that on a global scale, Mu is responsible only for 0.1 percent. infection. So far, infections with this variant have been detected in 39 countries around the world, including the highest number in the USA. “The Mu variant in South America, along with the Delta variant, will be monitored for changes,” the UN health agency said.

A new variant of the coronavirus in Poland

Mu has been referred to as the SARS-CoV-2 “variant of interest”. The Eta, Iota, Kappa and Lambda mutations also have this designation.

Until now, WHO so-called the so-called worrying variant (variant of concern) included: Alfa (B.1.1.7, formerly UK), Beta variant (B.1.351; formerly South African), Gamma variant (P1; Brazilian) and Delta variant (B.1.617.2 ; Indian).
