Millions of people have died around the world as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and if it were not for vaccines, more than twice as many would have died – these are the results of research by the World Health Organization (WHO). The report shows how much the introduction of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 has changed, which is why experts appeal to people to take them and remind them that the coronavirus has not disappeared.

Mrs. Aleksandra Radomiak has just been vaccinated against COVID-19. – I have been vaccinated with four doses so far, now I found out that I can get vaccinated with a fifth. I generally believe in science and medicine, not in conspiracy theories, says the woman.

So far, over half a million people have been vaccinated with the vaccine that has been available in Poland since December, protecting against the latest strains of SARS-CoV-2. Most are people between 60 and 80 years old.

According to the latest research by the World Health Organization, COVID-19 vaccines have reduced the number of deaths by as much as 57 percent. This means that almost one and a half million people were saved in Europe alone. Globally, there are many more lives saved thanks to vaccines. According to unofficial data, as many as 20 million people died worldwide due to the pandemic. Largely due to acute pneumonia.

– The vaccine introduced in 2021 stopped this process of lung damage, so I am not surprised that it is so effective in the first years of the pandemic – comments Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, expert of the Supreme Medical Council on epidemic threats.

Now vaccines, as Dr. Grzesiowski reminds us, protect us against the so-called long Covid. So it’s good that half a million Poles have already been vaccinated this season, but pharmacists’ satisfaction is mixed with irritation because many more could be vaccinated.

Problems with the new application

Until December, there were no new vaccines in Poland at all because former Health Minister Adam Niedzielski did not order them on time, and in December they appeared as a hard-to-find rarity. Now they are, but there are not many people willing to be vaccinated in pharmacies because the e-registration system does not work well.

– Interest in vaccinations dropped when the new e-registration was introduced – says Mariusz Politowicz, member of the Supreme Pharmaceutical Council, Pod Wągą pharmacy in Pleszew. – There are problems with signing up because the application that previously allowed signing up for vaccination against COVID-19 was disabled in mid-December – says Agnieszka Dyl from the Oliwa pharmacy in Krakow.

The departing PiS team is also to blame for this. The new application contains a lot of errors. – The previous one was a Rolls-Royce compared to this one, while now we use a ladder truck – says Politowicz. – Some pharmacies that vaccinate in the e-registration system are invisible – adds Krzysztof Majka, manager of the Na Maliny pharmacy in Sosnowiec.

However, looking at WHO data, it is worth facing the bureaucracy, finding a place for vaccination and getting vaccinated.
