Who will be among the contenders for the Oscar? Critics point to Skolimowski’s “IO” as a sure bet for the nomination

“Ghosts of Inisherin” by Martin McDonagh, “Fabelmans” by Steven Spielberg, “Everywhere, All at Once” by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and “Top Gun: Maverick” by Joseph Kosinski are the favorites in the fight for the Oscar for Best Picture in the opinion of American industry portals . The Polish production of Jerzy Skolimowski’s “IO” has a good chance of being nominated in the International Film category.

If American critics are to be believed, in the main Oscar category – Best Picture – four titles count the most. They are McDonagh’s “Inisherin Ghosts”, Spielberg’s “Fabelmans”, “Everything, Everywhere, At Once” by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and “Top Gun: Maverick” by Kosinski. Action cinema rarely has the opportunity to compete for the title of the best film, but in recent years the Academy has been making sure that the gems of the genre are on the list of nominees.

The rest of the titles, such as “TAR”, “Elvis”, “The Whale” or “Avatar: The Essence of Water” are mentioned much less often, although they will certainly also be nominated in the most important category, but with less chance of winning the statuette itself.

We are most interested, as every year, in the nominations in the fight for Oscar in the International Film category, especially since this year’s Polish candidate, “IO” by Jerzy Skolimowski, has a good chance of being nominated. After the hat-trick of the critics associations of Los Angeles, New York, and finally the National Society of Film Critics, our hopes are fully justified. The nomination of “IO” is also predicted by the industry media overseas and bookmakers.

Whether it’s right, we’ll find out on Tuesday early afternoon.

McDonagh, Spielberg and the third one

2022 has been kind to English-language cinema. Your best movie in years “Fabelmans”directed by Steven Spielberg, Darren Aronofsky returned to form with the poignant “The Whale”, Todd Phillips with “TAR” permanently joined the group of the most important American filmmakers.

The Irishman Martin McDonagh, who had already received an Oscar for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, who was badly hurt by the Academy, should now feel remorse with “The Ghosts of Inishering”. A gloomy comedy-drama about the fear of loneliness and rejection, with a great role by perhaps this year’s Oscar winner Colin Farrell, is indisputably one of the most interesting titles of 2022. The picture won the Golden Globe in the category: Best Comedy.

In the latter category, however, the winner was Steven Spielberg, who, while shooting “Fabelmans”, wrote probably the most beautiful love letter to the tenth muse since “Cinema Paradiso” by Giuseppe Tornatore. The Golden Globes again, as years ago, set the direction for further competition for the most important awards of the season and it seemed that the rest of the titles had no chance in competition with these two films.

The situation changed when the Americans went crazy about the production of “Everything, everywhere, at once.” The surreal story of the duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schneinert was shot mainly in English and with American money, but mostly with an Asian cast. This story of an emotional, philosophical and rather strange journey to the Multiverse, during which the heroes – Chinese immigrants – discover metaphysical wisdom, conquered America. Even though it’s not a movie for everyone.

Who knows if on Tuesday the number of Oscar nominations for the film of the Daniel duo will not beat Spielberg and McDonagh. “Everything…” will definitely receive nominations in the main category, for direction, screenplay, plus two or even three acting nominations. If they add more for set design, costumes, editing – and these seem certain – it has a chance to beat the other productions. Although the Golden Globes were won “only” by its actors, the lead actress – Malaysian Michelle Yeoh – may at a later stage threaten the Oscar favorite for the leading female role, Cate Blanchett, who plays in the film “TAR”.

Who is IO fighting with?

Considered “for sure” by the industry media, Jerzy Skolimowski’s extraordinary “IO” was enthusiastically received overseas, as evidenced by the aforementioned hat-trick of critics. But there is no favourite.

It is the German adaptation of Erich Mario Remarque’s well-known prose “Same in the West”, which has the best chance of winning the statuette in the International Film category. The picture delighted the Americans to such an extent that they predict that it will also be nominated in the main category, traditionally almost entirely dominated by English-language productions.

Two titles also appear on the rating lists, apart from the Polish film: the moving Belgian film “Closer” by Lukas Dhont, telling a sensual story about the friendship of two 13-year-olds, and “Holy Spider” by the Iranian director Ali Abbasi. This is the brutal and shocking story of a serial killer who Iran in 2000 he killed sex workers under the pretext of “cleansing the city”.

South Korean director Park Chan-wook’s “Suspect” may also be nominated, which has already been awarded at Cannes for directing. As you can see, Americans have recently discovered Asian cinema, catching up now.

The five nominated titles may also include “Argentina1985″, recently awarded with the Golden Globe. So we already have six titles, i.e. a crowd, while only five of them will receive a nomination. The final ones will be decided by the nominees score introduced this year.

We just have to keep our fingers crossed. The Oscar winners will be announced in less than two months – on March 13.
