In May 2017, the Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk spoke about the need to widen the A2 motorway by one lane in each direction. Although almost six years have passed, work has still not started on one of the most congested expressways in Poland. Why? – Preparation of the investment takes seven or eight years. Without this, construction cannot be started – says Maciej Zalewski, spokesman for the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways in Łódź.
This – according to the measurements to which he has access General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways – one of the most crowded sections of the expressway in the country. – Every day, there are about 50,000 cars between Łódź and Pruszków. On the section between Pruszków and the Konotopa junction, there are even more of them, about 90,000 a day – enumerates TVN24 reporter Katarzyna Pasikowska-Poczopko, who dealt with the topic of the unrealized promise to widen the motorway.
These numbers are growing rapidly, because – according to GDDKiA – the traffic of passenger cars on the A2 has increased by 50 percent in recent years, and of trucks – by as much as 60 percent.
The first declarations about widening the road were made by the Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk in May 2017, almost six years ago. On the air of the program “Balance” on TVN24 BiS he estimated that the drivers might “in two, three years” they will drive on the extended highway. He stressed, however, that these are very indicative time frames that may be changed.
Work has not yet started and there is little indication that it will start in the near future. Why? A few days ago, the highway manager opened bids for the preparation of documentation necessary for the extension of the A2 motorway between Łódź and Warsaw by an additional traffic lane.
GDDKiA: it must go on, everything must be checked
Maciej Zalewski, spokesman for the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, when asked why, despite the passage of years, work on the motorway has not started, replies that the whole process cannot be accelerated.
– The process of building this type of road takes about three years, but seven or eight years are needed to prepare the investment before starting work. This is a time-consuming part of the process, which may not be noticed by drivers, but without it you cannot start work. It must go on, everything must be checked, Zalewski points out.
He adds that work on the A2 must be carried out in a way that will allow the permanent use of traffic lanes in both directions.
So when will the work start? It should be remembered that after selecting the contractor for the documentation, you will have to wait another 18 months for the completion of this stage of the investment. My calculations show that if there are no complications along the way, work will start in 2026 – emphasizes Pasikowska-Poczopko.
In a communication from June 2021, the General Directorate for National Roads declared that – “provided that the procedure runs smoothly” – the commencement of works is planned for autumn 2023, and their completion – at the turn of 2025 and 2026.
