Shooting down Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory will not be an individual decision by Poland – said Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. The deputy prime minister and head of the Ministry of National Defense is in Washington for the NATO summit. In a conversation with Marcin Wrona, a correspondent for “Fakty” TVN, he said that one of the topics he discusses with allies is support in the matter of defending the Polish border.

The North Atlantic Alliance summit is held in Washington. The event includes leaders in addition to NATO countries The president, among others, will also take part Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. Poland is represented by the president Andrzej Dudahead of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski and the head of the Ministry of National Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.

The latter in a conversation with the correspondent of “Fakty” TVN in USA Marcin Wrona said that over 10 thousand NATO soldiers are stationed in Poland. He assessed that although in the military dimension this is a very good signal, Poland “expects greater involvement, for example in the construction of the East Shield”. – When it comes to protection at the border against bandits who try to stab Polish soldiers, here we expect allied support from European Union and NATO countries. We are talking about this in Washington – he said.

– It is a very important matter for us that the border, the eastern flank of NATO, the eastern border of the European Union becomes an international issue, and not just a Polish issue – he added.

Minister of National Defense: Poland will not decide on its own about shooting down Russian missiles

The Minister of National Defense announced that after the NATO summit in Washington, Ukraine can count on receiving further weapons supplies, as well as further training for soldiers, including in Poland.

Asked whether the Polish Army, in accordance with the appeals of the Ukrainian authorities, will shoot down Russian missiles from our territory, he emphasized that “Ukrainians have been talking about it for a long time and they are not talking only about Poland, but about NATO countries”. – It is natural that Ukraine will speak much higher than it will be able to achieve and this may also be the case here – he assessed.

– If there were such a decision, it could only be an allied decision. It will never be an individual decision. (…) The key opinion of the United States, which is quite sceptical on this matter, so Poland will certainly not make such a decision on its own – emphasized Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

In the context of the transfer of Patriot systems to Ukraine announced by the United States, the Minister of National Defense stated that “Poland will have the Patriots that are available today.” – I talked with the Secretary of Defense during the summit Lloyd Austin regarding the presence of Patriots in Poland, he said: “nothing is threatened here, we will be with you” – he mentioned.

– There will definitely be American Patriots to protect the airport in Rzeszów. This is a fundamental point related to deliveries to Ukraine. We must protect what serves Ukraine, and this serves it very well – he explained.

Defense budget “can only go higher”

The Minister of National Defense confirmed that the Polish defense budget next year will be much higher than this year, “and much higher than in the years of our predecessors.” – It is now 4 percent (of GDP), so imagine how much it will be next year. This is the most of all NATO countries. No one spends that much. I cannot imagine anyone deciding to reduce (the budget) in any way today – he said.

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, when asked if he had announced his departure in a conversation with President Andrzej Duda if defense spending was cut, explained that he had made such a declaration publicly, not in a conversation with the president. “I cannot imagine that the budget for the army, for weapons, would be lower in the coming years. It can only be higher,” he added.
