A heatwave has swept the northern hemisphere in recent weeks. Experts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) believe that this week the temperature in North America, Asia, North Africa and the Mediterranean basin will exceed 40 degrees. At night, thermometers can show up to 30 degrees

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned that the heat wave that has been going on for several weeks is expected to intensify this week. Thermometers in North America, Asia, North Africa and the Mediterranean can show over 40 degrees Celsius, experts said in a statement. This can cause the temperature to oscillate around 30 degrees at midnight.

– High temperatures at night are especially dangerous for human health, because the body is unable to regenerate itself. This leads to an increased number of heart attacks and deaths, said John Nairm, a researcher at the WMO. “The Mediterranean heatwave is significant, but nothing like what went through North Africa yet,” he added.

According to the WMO, a new heat record for Europe may be set in the coming days. The highest temperature for this continent was recorded in Sicily in August 2021. Thermometers then showed 48.8 degrees C. The world record was set in Death Valley, California in July 1913, it was 56.7 degrees C.

Mr Saaristo of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said the scorching heat was especially dangerous for infants, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses.

According to experts, more than 60,000 Europeans may have died during last year’s heatwaves, despite having some of the world’s best early warning systems. “IFRC is calling the elderly in Italy to check on them, distributing drinking water in Greece and creating shelters for people affected by the fire on the Spanish island of La Palma,” said Saaristo.
