A policeman from Świecie (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship), who intervened during a house fire in which a man living alone died, took in the dog Teodor, who was trapped on a chain. The animal was emaciated and cold.
The tragic house fire in the Świecie district occurred some time ago – the police do not say when exactly. According to the police, a man living alone died in the burning building.
During the intervention, the officers noticed a makeshift kennel on the property with a dog inside.
“He immediately gained sympathy”
“The animal was kept in harsh conditions, on a heavy chain, next to a structure that only resembled a kennel and certainly did not provide sufficient protection against the gusty and frosty wind. The cold and emaciated dog, with a gentle temperament, immediately gained the sympathy of the policeman. When he the glove to pet him, the dog immediately grabbed it and did not want to give it back,” we read in a statement from the District Police Headquarters in Świecie.
The police emphasize that an animal without a guardian usually ends up in an animal shelter. In this case, the officer had a different idea: after a telephone consultation with the family, he took in the dog, at least until the deceased man’s relatives decided whether they wanted to take care of the animal.
A new name and a new home
“Because no one knew the dog’s name yet, he was given a new name – Teodor. However, the household members call him diminutive – Teo. He has already been to the vet, received a complete set of vaccinations and has been dewormed. It turned out that he is about six years old and is in “pretty good condition, although it could weigh a little more,” the statement said, adding that the dog replaced the kennel and chain with a “living room with a fireplace and a comfortable couch.”
Teodor received a toy from the officer’s children – a hedgehog mascot, “with whom he almost never parts.” “He likes long walks, but above all, he shares his passion for running with his new owner. They have been running together for some time,” we read in the announcement.
Ultimately, the relatives of the tragically deceased man declared that they were unable to take care of the dog. Thus, Teodor officially found a new permanent home with the policeman.
