They were born seven months pregnant. Patrycja weighed 380 grams, fit in the doctor’s hand, ate a drop of milk. Her brother Maurice was three times heavier, weighed only a little more than a packet of sugar or flour. 6-7 percent of children in Poland are born prematurely, about 27,000 a year.
Today is the World Premature Baby Day.
They celebrate children who, after birth, weighed as much as a teddy bear – 450 grams. Like Berenika, who was born in the 24th week of pregnancy. Or as much as a 1.5 liter bottle of water. This is how much (together!) Karolina and Aleksander, twins born in the 24th week of pregnancy, weighed.
They celebrate parents who, sometimes for long weeks, can only look at their children through steamy incubators. Not only are they unable to hug them, they cannot even touch them, because they would leave fingerprints on such a delicate skin.
The doctors who saved these children’s lives are celebrating. Joachim, 19-year-old today, born in the Saint Sophia Hospital in Warsaw. Year after year, on the occasion of his birthday, he would bring the doctors a cake and give thanks.
Yesterday, doctors from Saint Sophia discharged from the hospital their smallest patient, one of the smallest girls born in Poland. Her parents named her Patrycja, doctors call her Thumbelina.
Patrycja and Maurycy
On ultrasound it was very difficult to see them separately. – They were so tight that their heart rate overlapped – says Agnieszka, their mother. She knew she would be born ahead of schedule.
– I’ve heard a lot of bad scenarios. One assumed that because it was an early pregnancy, I could lose both my son and my daughter. Later I heard that because the boy is doing better, the girl will disappear. And later, that when she disappears, he may not survive it – he recalls.
On August 25 this year, in the seventh month of pregnancy, both of them were born. Patrycja weighed 380 grams, Maurycy 1220, which is over three times more. 380 grams – ten times less than newborns born on the same day but on time.
He was born in 2009 in the 28th week of pregnancy. It weighed 950 grams. He immediately went to the incubator. On the third day after the birth, Małgorzata answered the phone: “Please come, sign the consent for the surgery”. Intestinal perforation.
Filip’s mother remembers perfectly well. Her older son was dancing in kindergarten that day. He was supposed to come with his parents, but his dad was on a business trip. Małgorzata struggled with her thoughts for a long time what to do. Go with your older son? Wait in the hospital to find out how Filip is doing? – You will not help the younger son now, please go to the older one – she heard from one of the doctors.
Małgorzata: – Filip was operated on, and I danced and even smiled, which shows how much a person can bear when life forces him to do so.
The brothers only met six months later. Filip spent so much time in the hospital. He recently blew out the twelfth candle on the cake.
