Despite record-breaking temperatures in the world, Polish politicians oppose one of the pillars of the Green Deal. Prof. Szymon Malinowski from the University of Warsaw and chairman of the Climate Crisis Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences warns that “there are no reasons for it to be better” when it comes to climate. – Greenhouse gas emissions are constantly growing – he emphasized in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24.

Last week was the hottest in the history of measurements in the world, the AFP agency reported, citing preliminary calculations by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

– There’s no reason for it to be any better. Greenhouse gas emissions are constantly growing – said in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 prof. Szymon Malinowski from the University of Warsaw and chairman of the Climate Crisis Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

– What is worse, various natural elements of the climate system are beginning to destabilize, which increase emissions, not anthropogenic, but from the fact that, for example, forests in the northern hemisphere are burning rapidly – he stressed.

– IN Canada this is the worst season ever. It is now mid-summer, and significantly more has been burned than in the worst season of the previous season. Nobody reports from Eastern Siberia, we only see satellite data. I watched Greenland melt, another day more than 50 percent of the island’s surface is melting – he enumerated.

Prof. Malinowski: we must educate decision makers

European parliament passed the so-called Nature Restoration Law on Wednesday, one of the pillars of the Green Deal. It is about a series of provisions aimed at restoring nature by 2030, in at least 20 percent of land and sea areas in the European Union. Despite appeals from environmental organizations, almost all MEPs from the Civic Platform and United Right were against it.

Prof. Szymon Malinowski stated that this is because politicians “do not know these numbers at all”. – They do not look out of the window at all, they do not distinguish the weather from the climate – he added.

– Many times we proposed with our colleagues from climate science to organize training for parliamentarians, but this is throwing peas against the wall. We talk an awful lot about climate education, but it comes down to the fact that we will talk about climate at school – he said.

– However, we must educate decision-makers. Not only politicians, but also economic decision makers and some media circles. In each of these groups there are conscious people, but the majority of them are unaware – he added.
