WOŚP 2023 coming soon. On this occasion, the astrogeodynamic observatory in Borówiec near Poznań put up a unique attraction for auction by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. The winner of the auction will be able to shoot lasers at satellites and space debris. Another auction is for a private tour of the European Astronaut Center in Cologne, Germany.

The subject of the auction of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, which was put up by the Astrogeodynamic Observatory of the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Borówiec, is laser shooting at satellites and space debris.

A “cosmic night” awaits the winner

– A fragment of this laser rangefinder is here behind me. Its part is the telescope, which is one of the basic elements of this laser rangefinder. The person who wins such an auction will be able to control this entire system. I mean not only this telescope that allows you to control the beam and view the object we are observing, but also to launch, shoot the laser itself, select such an object and prepare for such an observation – explains Dr. Paweł Lejba, head of the observatory.

He adds: – This is a very unique system not only in Poland, but also in Europe and the world. There are not many laser stations in the world that enable such measurements.

These measurements make it possible to measure the distance of objects that orbit hundreds or even thousands of kilometers from us. “It’s fun learning, but I think it’s also fun.” That is why I encourage you to participate in this auction – emphasizes Dr. Lejba.

The Astrogeodynamic Observatory of the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Borówiec near Poznań is the only scientific institution in Poland that conducts regular laser measurements of satellites and space debris. The results of such measurements are used e.g. to determine the orbits of various satellites and objects such as space junk, the position and speed of ground stations, the coefficients of the Earth’s gravitational field and their changes over time, or to determine the parameters of the Earth’s rotation. Laser observations of CBK PAN are used on an ongoing basis to build a national and European program related to satellite monitoring and protection, as well as tracking space debris.

“Together with your family or a group of friends, you will be able to spend the whole night at the Observatory, look into its nooks and crannies and see with your own eyes how this unique center works” – we read in the description of the auction.

Feel like a real astronaut

Another cosmic adventure can be experienced thanks to the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity in Cologne. There is the European Astronaut Center (EAC) – a place where astronauts and astronauts of the European Space Agency (ESA) work when not on a space mission, and also prepare for missions to the International Space Station (ISS), training the operation of its European modules.

A Polish woman, Dr. Anna Fogtman, works in the Space Medicine and SciSpacE Team at the European Astronaut Center. She plans to protect the health of ESA astronauts from cosmic radiation on future missions to the moon. The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity put a guided tour of the center up for auction.

Dr. Fogtman will show the winner of the auction around the center, talk about how people fly into space today and what space plans ESA has for the future.

The winner of the auction will also be able to enter the Russian manned dome, sit in it and feel like a real astronaut.

What else? “You will also visit the flight control center, where you will learn about the secrets of communication with people in space. You will see the swimming pool where astronauts prepare for space walks. At the end of the trip, you will receive a bag of space gadgets” – we read in the description of the auction.
