The auction of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity included a legendary photo of Chris Niedenthal, a symbol of martial law in Poland. Together with the photographer, they were exhibited by Lena and Filip Sosnowski. – WOŚP helped save our lives and health. Today we are four years old and we want (with a little help from our parents) to thank you and give back at least a fraction of the good that has happened to us – we read in the auction description.

TVN WARNER BROS GROUP. DISCOVERY IS THE MAIN MEDIA PARTNER OF THE GREAT ORCHESTRA OF CHRISTMAS CHARITY FINALS FOR THE NINTH TIME.

The ninth print of “Apocalypse Now” is up for auction – a legendary photo taken by Chris Niedenthal on December 14, 1981, the second day of martial law. It depicts soldiers and a Medium Wheeled Armored Personnel Carrier, the so-called SKOT in front of the Moscow cinema in Warsaw, on whose facade there is a poster advertising the film “Apocalypse Now” by Coppola.

– I am aware of how important “Apocalypse Now” is for Poland and Poles. This is a very special photograph and it deserves special rights. Therefore it is not for sale. For it to end up in someone's hands, the target must be unique. This is what he is like now – explained the author of the photo.

The story of Lena and Filip

The twins Lena and Filip, who together with Chris Niedenthal and with the help of their parents, put the photo up for auction for the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, were born in the 26th week and 6th day of pregnancy, thus being called extremely premature babies. They weighed 900 and 1080 grams. After birth, they were placed on ventilators. In the auction description, the parents of the twins emphasize that their children used equipment purchased by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity during their 65-day hospital stay.

“Respirators, incubators, CEPAPs, Infant Flow devices, heart monitors, pulse oximeters, infusion pumps, kangaroo chairs. Some of you may not even know what they are for. These are the things thanks to which our premature twins are alive and healthy. They are alive and healthy thanks to the help of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, which, over the years of playing, has donated all this equipment to neonatal units in Poland,” the parents explained.

They also added that this is not the twins' first Final. “Lena and Filip are collecting for the third time at WOŚP. So far (in piggy banks and at auctions) they have managed to collect a total of an astronomical amount of PLN 57,000. PLN 74 and PLN 18!” – they noted.

WOŚP 2025. Summer riot in the middle of winter

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity has been playing since 1993. For 32 years, the WOŚP Foundation has been supporting the Polish health care system through one-day public collections called Finals: it buys the most modern medical equipment for hospitals, runs eight nationwide medical programs, implements an educational program and promotes a healthy lifestyle and preventive activities. During 32 Finals, WOŚP collected nearly PLN 2.3 billion, which was used to purchase 74.5 thousand various medical devices. During most of the Finals, the Orchestra played to improve the quality of medical care for children. But not only that. In the last two years, the Foundation also conducted collections for adults: in 2023 for the fight against sepsis, and in 2024 – for the treatment of lung diseases. The main theme of the 33rd Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity is the safety and health of children, and is accompanied by the slogan: “We play for health!”. The collected funds will be allocated to the needs of pediatric hematology and oncology. The 33rd Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity will take place on Sunday, January 26, but some traditional initiatives – such as the Warsaw Run “Count yourself with diabetes!” – will be organized on Saturday, January 25. All the most important events will be available on TVN24, TVN, TTV, on MAX, Player.pl, TVN24 GO and on the tvn24.pl portal.
