A fair investigation, punishment of the guilty, and a promise that it will never happen again. This is what the protesters who came to the police station in Wrocław wanted. It is the case of a 25-year-old Dmytro, a Ukrainian who died in July in a sobering-up center. The man was to be beaten and strangled. The Voivodship Commander of the Police in Wrocław has already dismissed one of the policemen participating in the intervention.

On July 30, Dmytro Nikiforenko played with his friends on a barbecue with alcohol. In the late afternoon, he was returning from the party by bus N. At the Petrusewicz bus stop, the driver called an ambulance to him. However, the rescuers did not see any grounds to transport the drunk man to the hospital.

The 25-year-old was taken to the Wrocław Center for Help for Drunken Persons. The police said he had behaved very aggressively during the intervention. The Ukrainian citizen – as confirmed by the prosecutor’s office – died on the same day he was taken to the center. As Gazeta Wyborcza wrote on September 2, Dmytro died after police intervention. The daily reported that the man was hit with gas, beaten with a club and strangled, as evidenced by the surveillance recording.

Commissioner Kamil Rynkiewicz, a spokesman for the Lower Silesian police, came to the protesters, who emphasized that immediately after the incident, on July 30, the police notified the prosecutor’s office about the case. Regardless of this, four officers have already been suspended, and a procedure related to expulsion from the service has been implemented for two due to the important interest of the service.

– One of these procedures, related to the behavior of a policeman who used physical force and a truncheon, ended on Friday. The policeman was dismissed from service. The procedure for the second officer is pending. But for us, the findings of the prosecutor’s office will be important – said the spokesman.
