During renovation works in the vicinity of the Szczytnicki Bridge in Wrocław, a medium-pressure gas pipeline was damaged. Traffic in this area is completely blocked until the fault is fixed. Residents of two nearby blocks of flats were evacuated.
According to the press office of the Wrocław City Hall, the gas pipeline was unsealed on Tuesday around 11.40. The Szczytnicki Bridge was closed to traffic in both directions. There are 10 fire brigades, police and gas ambulance on the spot.
– The failure occurred at the intersection of Kochanowskiego and Parkowa Streets during construction works. The area around was secured, a total of 27 people were evacuated from two nearby buildings. Gasworkers are trying to seal the pipe – says Tomasz Szwajnos, spokesman for the Wrocław fire brigade.
Big traffic jams
The Crisis Management Center informs that due to the unsealing of the gas pipeline, the energy emergency service was notified of the need to turn off the electricity in street lamps. The Roads and City Maintenance Authority and ITS were also asked to urgently turn off the traffic lights due to the very high gas concentration. The gas has also accumulated inside the poles of street lamps, reports CZK.
A bus was dispatched to the site, in which the evacuated residents can wait out the action. Large traffic jams form in the vicinity of the Szczytnicki Bridge. Authorities are unable to say how long the disruptions will last.
