At the same time, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said that the Houthis attacked the American tanker “Torm Thor”, sailing under the US flag, in the Gulf of Aden on Saturday. The Americans reported that the missile was shot down and the unit was not damaged.

Houthis attack merchant ships

Yemen’s rebel Houthi movement has been shelling merchant ships since October last year, claiming it is support for those fighting against Israel Palestinian terrorists from Hamas. Their attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden disrupted international transport and increased fears about the spread of the Palestinian-Israeli armed conflict throughout the Middle East.

Attacks Houthi rebels in the Red Sea have caused many shipping companies to redirect shipments to the route around Africa. However, this extends the transport time by approximately 10-14 days, which also translates into an increase in the costs of transporting goods.

In response to attacks that threaten maritime transport, US troops have been conducting airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen since January 12.
