A spokesman for the Houthi-controlled interior ministry said panic occurred during the distribution of charity gifts on the last day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

People gathered to receive help

Hundreds of people gathered at a school to receive 5,000 Yemeni riyals, or about $9 per person, from merchants who organized a charity drive, two witnesses involved in the rescue operation told Reuters.

The Ministry of the Interior said that two merchants responsible for organizing the distribution of donations have been detained.
