– Today we are dealing with what I call a pandemic of problematic Internet use – said Magdalena Bigaj, president of the “Institute of Digital Citizenship” Foundation, in the “Wstańsz i weekend” program. Director and producer Dariusz Bigaj appealed to use the Internet consciously. The conversation in the studio concerned the mental health of children and adolescents.

In case of a mental crisis, call for help! Helpline for children and young people 116 111.

It should be remembered that you do not have to be addicted to the Internet to have a problem – said Magdalena Bigaj on TVN24. As she said, she may have problems with self-esteem, for example. a girl who uses the Internet seemingly “hygienically”, i.e. within the limits set.

– For example, he or she watches content that presents an idealized reality. Such a girl may suffer from self-esteem problems. Besides, we adults also suffer from problems with self-esteem because of what we see on the Internet, where there are only winners and life is much easier – emphasized the interlocutor of “You get up and it’s weekend”.

A world created by adults

The president of the Digital Citizenship Institute Foundation said that “children today live in a world that we, adults, have created.” – We are responsible for what happens to children, we absolutely cannot accept the rhetoric that they are some lost generation that has lost itself in the media. They (children – ed.) only use the world that we, adults, have created – she emphasized. – This world is definitely more complex than our brain can handle – she added.

Bigaj emphasized that the intensive development of technology has caused the brains of both adults and children to be “extremely overloaded” with information. Each of us should know this fact and we cannot avoid it, she added.

“The owners of social media platforms do not comply with the Convention on the Rights of the Child”

Bigaj emphasized that as a result of “information fatigue” we may suffer from low mood. Another issue is the content that children are exposed to. – I have to say it out loud. The owners of social media platforms do not comply with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that children have the right to a safe living environment. If children under the age of 16 are able to use platforms (…), it means that these platforms are not safe for children – emphasized the interlocutor of “Get up and have a weekend”. This includes exposure to content regarding suicide attempts or encouraging risky health behaviors.

In her opinion, creators of new technologies should be required to comply with the law on the Internet, because it is not a virtual world, but one that has a real impact on our children. – If we are talking about the growing rates of depression, anxiety and mental problems among children and teenagers, we cannot only deal with psychiatric care, but also look for the causes – she said.

Magdalena BIgaj pointed out that there are many reasons. – Unlimited and poor-quality access to the Internet for children, especially at an early age, is certainly one of the reasons – she emphasized.

Gował: let’s use the Internet consciously

– We will not avoid the Internet and we do not want to say that it is not good – said another guest of “Wstańsz i weekend”, director and producer Dariusz Gowała, author of the documentary “Niebieski Wieloryb” about depression among children, which is now available in Player. He appealed to use the Internet in a “conscious” way.

As he confessed, what was shocking to him was that while conducting a survey among young children, it turned out that children as young as four received phone calls from their parents, who explained that their child “would be safe and there would be contact with him.”

– It is completely uncontrollable what these children are looking for on the Internet, what they do when they go to school and have their heads on their phones – said the director.
