Many athletes got involved in helping those in need. Iga Swiatek inspired people to donate money to specific collections, while the legendary volleyball player Daniel Pliński, together with the residents of Nysa, recently tried to strengthen the embankments. – The most important thing is that no one gets hurt, that everyone survives – he admitted. Śląsk players also got to work on Wednesday, and now the Zagłębie Lubin academy players have done the same.
Zagłębie Lubin footballers rushed to help flood victims. “These are values that last a lifetime”
For a few days now, the level of the Odra River has been rising rapidly, which poses a threat to the residents of Ścinawa. By decision of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, the bridge has been closed to traffic, but this is not a solution that will save people's property. – I haven't slept for 30 hours. My wife is afraid that the water will pour into the house. I remember the flood in 1997 very well. At that time, my house was waist-deep in water – said one of the residents in an interview with “Fact“.
In order to support the entire community, young footballers from Zagłębie Lubin showed up on Thursday. “It was our joint idea. We talked about it with the director of the academy, Adam Buczek. We decided that in this way we can help others, but the initiative can also be educational. I got permission to act. I asked the school principal if she would release the boys – she agreed. I also called the mother of one of the boys, who works in transport – she arranged transport for us,” explained Piotr Błauciak, coordinator of youth groups for TVP Sport.
Together with their guardians, 57 players made it to Ścinawa, who were very involved in helping those in need. – Some loaded sand into bags, others held them, and still others took them and moved them to the designated place. From the beginning, the boys' willingness to help was visible. They understood why we had come here and where the idea had come from. We worked from 2:45 p.m. to 7 p.m., because they had to go back to the dormitory for dinner. They came back with a sense of satisfaction that they could take part in such an action – he added.
The coordinator believes that, in addition to satisfaction from the help provided, the footballers will take much more. – We need to teach young people to help others, because these are values that last a lifetime – he emphasized. Finally, he admitted that the mayor of the city, Krystian Kosztyła, was very pleased with the arrival of the young people.
Zagłębie's senior team after eight rounds Premier League is only 15th in the table with 8 points. The next match will be played on Sunday, September 22, when it will face Raków away Czestochowa.
