The District Prosecutor's Office in Zamość sent an indictment against former MEP Ryszard Czarnecki to the District Court in Warsaw. The case concerns the so-called kilometers. The politician allegedly led the European Parliament to an “unfavorable disposition of property” worth over EUR 200,000.
Rafał Kawalec, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Zamość, announced on Wednesday that the indictment had been sent to the District Court in Warsaw. Investigators accused the former MEP Ryszard Czarnecki for fraud in connection with the so-called kilometers.
According to investigators' findings, in the years 2009-2013 the politician was responsible for European Parliament to unfavorable disposal of property in the total amount of approx. PLN 203,000. euro. As explained, in the documents prepared and signed by him, he provided false information regarding his place of residence in Poland. Then – as reported – he allegedly submitted 243 applications for reimbursement of travel expenses, in which he provided untruths regarding business trips – including the vehicles he was supposed to use and the number of kilometers traveled.

The prosecutor's office reported that the total value of the damage was PLN 854,000. zloty. “At the same time, the findings show that the suspect has so far returned the amount of EUR 104.5 thousand (PLN 439.6 thousand) to the injured institution,” the spokesman said.
The suspect did not plead guilty to the charge and submitted a short explanation to the prosecutor's office, pointing out that any irregularities found were errors.

He faces up to 15 years in prison for the alleged act.
