Senior lost a wallet with cash – there was less than three thousand zlotys inside. The loss was found by a 32-year-old who appropriated the money instead of taking it to the police or to the lost and found office. Now the finder faces up to three years in prison.
As the spokeswoman for the police in Sierpc, Katarzyna Krukowska, announced on Tuesday, several days ago, an 84-year-old resident of this poviat reported losing a wallet with money in the area of the shop in the Zawidz commune. The officers there analyzed recordings from surveillance cameras placed near the scene of the incident, which allowed them to identify the finder.
He took the wallet with its contents
It turned out that the wallet with cash was appropriated by a 32-year-old resident of the Żuromin district. “The man took advantage of the opportunity and took the found wallet with the contents, instead of reporting the finding to the police or handing over the wallet to the lost and found office,” emphasized Krukowska.
A spokeswoman for the Sierpc police noted that during the interrogation, the 32-year-old confessed to the alleged act – appropriation of someone else’s property, for which he is punishable by up to three years in prison.
The police remind you that the proverbial “found – not stolen” does not go hand in hand with the lack of criminal responsibility.
“It should be remembered that any thing that we do not own is not ours” – emphasized in the information of the Sierpc police. As explained, in any case, the found item must be returned to the rightful owner, or handed over to the Lost and Found office or the incident reported to the police.
