We firmly defend Ukraine’s right to independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. We reiterate that as long as it is needed, Ukraine can count on our comprehensive support, said Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau in New York, where he took part in a meeting of the UN Security Council. He also explained what are the conditions for the effectiveness of sanctions imposed on Russia.
Minister Zbigniew Rau said that states belonging to the free world accepted with skepticism the peace initiative presented at the UN Security Council China. – There are two positive things to note about China’s peace proposals. There is a question of recognizing the need for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity Ukraine. China also opposes the use of nuclear weapons by Russia – noted the chief of Polish diplomacy.
He noted, however, that China’s peace plan lacks the element that it should be a “just peace” and the statement about who is the aggressor and who is the victim. According to the minister, the proposal does not indicate the need to bring justice to those responsible for war crimes and to compensate for the harm done.
Rau also spoke about the principle that Ukraine should be helped as much and as quickly as possible. “This is how we set the tone for the entire community of the free world.” We confirm this practically every day since the beginning of Russian aggression.
Rau on sanctions against Russia
When asked about the effectiveness of the sanctions against Russia, the minister admitted that the obedience of the local society to the authorities is extremely strong, regardless of the standard of living.
– This society is able to tighten its belt and the authorities are aware of it. Another question is whether Russia will be able to wage war effectively when these sanctions – and we in the European Union are well aware (that they are) full of loopholes and often inconsistent in their application – will play at least part of this role, what we want to attribute to them. I believe that in this case, Russia will suffer visible consequences in the medium term, Rau predicted.
Rau: We firmly defend Ukraine’s right to independence
The foreign minister pointed out that, contrary to the Kremlin’s expectations, Ukraine belongs to the free world. He considered the spectacular unity of the free world caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine to be extremely important. At the same time, he drew attention to the leading role of the USA.
– There is no unity in the free world without American leadership. (…) United States they are the superpower and leader of the free world. There is no alternative to their leadership, argued the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Commenting on the current relations between Poland and Russia, Rau stated that they have not changed for a year. – We firmly defend Ukraine’s right to independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. We repeat that as long as it is needed, Ukraine can count on our comprehensive support. Russia is the aggressor in the war against Ukraine and takes a position towards us resulting from these relations – he explained.
