The head of Polish diplomacy, Zbigniew Rau, takes part in an informal meeting of the heads of the European Union’s foreign ministries in Slovenia. Even before the talks, the head of the ministry said that they would concern Afghanistan, but also the situation on the eastern border of the EU. – Our point of view is close to Lithuania and Latvia – we expect support from other members of the European Union – stressed Rau.

Before the talks on Thursday, Zbigniew Rau said that they would concern the situation in Afghanistan. He stressed that in informal talks with the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which he had in Slovenia, almost everyone raised the topic of evacuation. – We talked about tactics, evacuation strategies and this is the number one issue, because each country reacts to it differently. We talk a lot about how it affects the political processes in individual countries, how the public reacts, said Rau.

– An extremely important issue for us will be the one we introduced to the agenda of this meeting with Lithuania and Latvia, namely the situation on our borders with Belarus. We see a lot of understanding for this issue, but objectively, Afghanistan is absolutely the most important issue, he added.

Rau on the border situation

Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia accuse Belarus of organizing the transfer of immigrants to their territory as part of the so-called hybrid war. In a joint statement, the prime ministers of Poland and the Baltic states assessed that the crisis on the borders with Belarus had been planned and systematically organized by the regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka. They also called on the Belarusian authorities to stop activities leading to escalating tensions.

As the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out in an interview with journalists, Poland expects support in the eastern issue from other EU members. – Our point of view is close to Lithuania and Latvia – we expect support from other members of the European Union – stressed Rau.

Heads of diplomacy on the situation in Afghanistan

The head of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the situation in Afghanistan will be discussed in the context of a potential migration crisis and destabilization in the region. Among the topics related to the current situation in that country, Rau also mentioned respect for human rights and Afghanistan’s relations with its neighbors.

– It is obvious that first the conditions acceptable for the European Union will be outlined, concerning first of all human rights and the admission of humanitarian aid. There is much hope that humanitarian corridors will be opened. There are such initiatives, especially the Franco-German one. There is a lot of hope, but also a lot of realism – he added.

The military mission of Western countries in Afghanistan ended at the end of August. 2,365 US soldiers died there, as well as 1,144 soldiers from the international ISAF coalition, including 44 Poles: 43 soldiers and a paramedic.

After the United States withdrew most of its troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban took control of much of the country, as well as the capital, Kabul. The EU and NATO countries organized the evacuation of their citizens and their associates from Afghanistan.

The talks between the chiefs of diplomacy of the member states in Kranj will last until Friday afternoon.
