Zbigniew Wodecki on postage stamps. “He will always be with us”

The image of Zbigniew Wodecki has found a new postage stamp from the “Stars of Polish Music” series, informed Poczta Polska. The stamp shows the artist with a violin – one of the three instruments he played – and his autograph.

Poczta Polska reported that “the stamp dedicated to one of the most popular Polish singers was introduced into circulation on May 6 this year, on the 72nd birthday of the artist and musical favorite of many generations, who died in 2017”. The official presentation of the stamp took place on Friday, June 10.

As we read in the announcement by Poczta Polska, “the issue was created in close cooperation with the daughter of Zbigniew Wodecki, Katarzyna Wodecka-Stubbs, who runs the Zbigniew Wodecki Foundation”.

“The stamp shows the figure of Zbigniew Wodecki with a violin – one of the three instruments he played – and the artist’s autograph. The photo comes from the period of his greatest popularity and recognition” – it was written.

The “Stars of Polish Music” series

As Andrzej Bodziony, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Poczta Polska said, “last year, Poczta Polska launched a new philatelic series ‘Stars of Polish Music'”. – Within its framework, the artists who have had the greatest impact on Polish music are presented at philatelic values. The star of the first issue was Krzysztof Krawczykthe second this year – Zbigniew Wodecki, an outstanding Polish artist from Krakow, said.

Zbigniew Wodecki was one of the most important figures in the Polish music world. Many listeners, when they think about him, see a long-haired virtuoso playing the violin, hear his melodies and popular songs. He was not only a singer and instrumentalist. He is also known as a composer and arranger. He called himself a “singing musician”.

In one of the interviews with PAP he mentioned that he started singing by accident. He made his debut as a vocalist in 1972 at the 10th Polish Song Festival in Opole with the song “Tak, to ty”. In the same year he staged his first television recital “Evening without the stars”. Soon after, his compositions and songs began to be appreciated by festival jurors all over Poland. He has recorded a total of seven albums (including one EP), incl. “Women’s souls”, “Side by side”. The last of them – “1976: A Space Odyssey” – was released seven years ago and gained the status of a gold album thanks to the cooperation of Wodecki with the band Mitch & Mitch.

His work has been appreciated by numerous awards, incl. the Medal for Merit to Culture “Gloria Artis” and the Honoris Gratia badge. He was also a Fryderyk laureate.
