– Basically, we are no different from a wheeled ambulance. We have the same equipment, competences, qualifications – says the head of the medical rescue water ambulance team in the Zegrze Reservoir. Paweł Świniarski talked about the summer threats, about his work and about the cases in which his team intervenes most often.

A floating ambulance on the Zegrze Reservoir is to ensure a safe rest for hundreds of Varsovians and residents of the surrounding towns, who use the beaches and practice water sports on this vast reservoir during weekends and holidays.

– Basically, we are no different from a wheeled ambulance. We have the same equipment, competences, qualifications – says Paweł Świniarski, the head of the medical rescue water ambulance team in the Zegrze Reservoir. The only thing that distinguishes the water ambulance from the one that moves on wheels is the ability to efficiently bypass the gigantic traffic jam, which is traditionally created, especially on days off from work, on the access roads to the Mazovian lake.

WE ARE. HOW TO BE SAFE OVER THE WATER.

Slips, strokes

When asked about a holiday accident that Poles suffer most often, he immediately mentions a wet slip. Because in the summer season, Poles like to rest by the water. We are talking not only about the sea – the shores of lakes and other water reservoirs are also besieged. Those who do not have a natural reservoir in the area are looking for swimming pools in hot weather.

– Slips occur most often on the pier, swimming pool tiles, wet stones – explains Świniarski. He adds that limb injuries usually result. You can take care of the smaller ones yourself, if the ailments last longer, you have to go to the hospital.

– The emergency medical team usually intervenes in such cases when there is an anatomical deformation – he explains. It is primarily about open fractures.

The obvious number two – when it comes to summer risks – are sun and heat ailments. – In case of sunburn, it is best to consult a pharmacist who will advise you on using the appropriate preparation. Curdled milk and kefir don’t work, says the lifeguard.

Conversely, high temperatures can cause sunstroke, otherwise known as heat shock, and from overheating the body. – Place that person in the shade as soon as possible. Give cool, but not cold water to drink – advises Świniarski. Rescuers should be called immediately in the event of unconsciousness, and even when there are disturbances in consciousness such as confusion, he explains.

Disregarding recommendations

Rescuers from the Zegrze Reservoir quite often help people who, due to heart and circulatory system diseases, should avoid heat and exertion, and disregard this medical recommendation. In such cases, there may be a dramatic struggle for life, and may need to be resustained.

Of course, due to the specificity of the water ambulance, which closely cooperates with the Legionowo WOPR, the most dramatic actions concern people rescued from the water. Despite the appeals of rescuers, services and warnings, drowning occurs every year at the Zegrze Reservoir – mostly after drinking alcohol.

Of course, too much alcohol can be dangerous without getting into the water. When drunk in the sun, especially by young or even minors, it can lead to loss of consciousness. Food that is improperly stored or eaten in unsanitary conditions can also be a threat on summer days.

– This mainly applies to children and the elderly, patients who are quickly dehydrated as a result of diarrhea and vomiting – warns the rescuer.

They saved a man who was carried away by the river’s current. They noticed him “at the last moment”.
