A 25-year-old woman was sentenced to five years in prison for causing an accident in which two men riding motorcycles and a passenger in one of them died. The tragedy occurred in May 2021 in Aleksandrów Łódzki. During the investigation, prosecutors found that the woman had exceeded the speed limit in a built-up area and, moments before the tragedy, she had tried to overtake the car in front of her.

The woman faced up to eight years in prison. Krzysztof Kopania from the District Prosecutor's Office in Łódź points out in an interview with tvn24.pl that the accused showed remorse and regret during the entire first-instance criminal trial after the tragedy that occurred on May 8, 2021.

– During the trial, the prosecutor's office requested a seven-year prison sentence. We will make a decision on a possible appeal only after we get acquainted with the written justification of the judgment, said prosecutor Kopania.

The District Court in Zgierz illegally sentenced the 25-year-old to five years in prison. In addition, the woman will lose her driving license for seven years and must pay compensation to the families of the accident victims.

120 km/h in built-up areas

Prosecutors investigating the circumstances of the tragic accident determined that the accused was driving a jeep through a built-up area at a speed of around 120 km/h. Such calculations were included in his opinion by a road traffic expert who was asked by prosecutors to recreate the circumstances of the tragedy.

– The woman, significantly exceeding the administratively permitted speed, and not having adequate visibility and sufficient space, attempted to overtake two cars. She drove into the left lane of the road, causing a collision with two motorcycles traveling from the opposite direction, i.e. a Honda and a Suzuki – recalls prosecutor Kopania's findings of the investigation.

The spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Łódź adds that, according to an expert's opinion, just before the accident, the jeep driven by the 25-year-old was accelerating and its speed was between 112 and 124 kilometers per hour. Immediately before the tragedy, the vehicle's computer recorded sharp braking, which triggered the ABS system. The first collision with the motorcycle occurred at a car speed of approximately 70 km/h. The motorcyclists were moving at a speed of 80-100 km/h. According to the expert, they had no way of avoiding the accident.

“She was driving aggressively”

According to witnesses interviewed during the investigation, the 22-year-old was driving very aggressively. One of the drivers told prosecutors that the woman overtook him, although the motorcyclists coming from the opposite direction were clearly visible. A moment before the tragedy, the accused allegedly swerved into her lane for a moment and then started overtaking again. Then there was a collision.

As a result of the accident, the drivers of both motorcycles died: a 40-year-old resident of Ozorków and a 43-year-old from Zgierz. The latter's 42-year-old wife, who was his passenger at the time of the accident, died in the hospital.
