A man who, on New Year's Eve in Zielona Góra, entered a pedestrian crossing at a red light and was hit by a car had almost 2.5 per mille of alcohol. He “celebrated” the New Year in the hospital with a broken leg.
The Lubusz police have just published a recording showing the entire incident. It shows a man entering a pedestrian crossing, disregarding the red light. Another pedestrian tries to stop him, but he retreats, probably seeing an approaching car.
– It is difficult to rationally explain the pedestrian's behavior – says Sub-Inspector Małgorzata Stanisławska, spokeswoman for the Municipal Police Commander in Zielona Góra. – He went straight under the wheels of an oncoming vehicle.
He started the “game” quickly and finished it quickly
The police suggest that the unreasonable and dangerous behavior of a 25-year-old resident of Nowa Sól district was most likely caused by too high alcohol concentration in his body. After an examination by the police, it turned out that the man had almost 2.5 per mille of alcohol in his body.
– The young man was taken to hospital for tests. Due to the fact that the pedestrian who was hit suffered a broken leg, the event was classified as road accident – explains Stanisławska.
The police appeal for caution
The Zielona Góra police reminds both pedestrians and drivers to be especially careful both at the crossings themselves and in their areas.
– Winter is a time when pedestrian safety is particularly at risk. This is influenced by various factors: changeable weather conditions, snow and rain, morning fog and icy roads, and early dusk. In this difficult time, let us take care of the safety of vulnerable road users and remember that in the event of an accident involving them, they suffer much more serious health consequences. Let's be especially careful around intersections and pedestrian crossings. Pedestrians, however, are asked to be careful because they sometimes cause road accidents, thus exposing themselves to health or even life – concludes Sub-Inspector Stanisławska.
