Żuławy Wiślane may be flooded by the sea. What do we do about it? “A Pole is wise after the damage”

Due to climate change, Żuławy Wiślane may disappear under water, because it is a depression – it is located below sea level. In this century, Żuławy will be regularly flooded by large storms in the Baltic Sea, the level of which will certainly rise. There is still time to save Żuławy. – A Pole is wise after the damage. After the first major flooding of Żuławy, a national program for saving Żuławy will be created and then things will be done that we should have done 20-30 years earlier – comments Prof. Jacek Piskozub.

Silence, peace, beautiful nature – this is how Żuławy Wiślane can be described in short. – From the perspective of Poland, we are really a small point. And now, if we were to hold a vote on whether to save Żuławy, I am not sure what it would be like, whether we would win – admits the president of the Nowodworski Club, Marek Opitz.

Saving Żuławy is mainly the concern of residents and local governments. – The sea level will simply rise regardless of what we do with emissions. It is simply a question of whether it will rise by that meter by the end of the century or a little earlier – comments Professor Szymon Malinowski, atmospheric physicist, naukaoklimacie.pl.

250 thousand people live in Żuławy Wiślane

It is difficult for scientists and residents of Żuławy to get their demands across to the decision-making authorities.

– It's not even about the waves, it's about the wind piling up the water near the shore – explains Professor Jacek Piskozub from the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. – Let's imagine a meter and a half of water rising and another meter of sea level rise. That would be enough to flood the entire Żuławy region – he adds.

This sounds like a sentence for 250,000 people, because that is how many people live in Żuławy and that is how many people may be underwater along with their belongings, as the residents of Żuławy told TVN24 reporter Marcin Kwaśny.

– For example, it is predicted that there will be no insurance when areas are flooded. What insurance company will want to insure something that is certain to be destroyed? I don't think we fully realize how this world will change – Marek Opitz points out.

– Żuławy must be protected by thousands of kilometres of embankments, and they are probably too low for the storms that will occur this century – says Prof. Jacek Piskozub.

“A Pole is wise after the damage”

Żuławy is a depression. Like most of Holland, whose example shows that such places can be protected, but one must act in advance.

– A Pole is wise after the damage. After the first major flooding of Żuławy, a national program to save Żuławy will be created and then things will be done that we should have done 20-30 years earlier – comments Prof. Jacek Piskozub.

A similar problem concerns the Hel Peninsula, which, according to scientists' calculations, will be regularly flooded, and therefore the peninsula will become one or more islands.

– At the moment, from a technical and construction point of view, from the point of view of recognizing wave and storm processes, sediment transport, we are able to cope with it – says Dr. Piotr Szmytkiewicz from the Institute of Hydroengineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

However, to use the technology we have, political will is needed.
