Poland has received a formal invitation to attend next year’s G20 summit in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced during an official visit to India, according to RMF24.

Speaking at a Friday briefing in India, Tusk revealed that the British prime minister had extended a clear invitation for Poland to participate in the 2026 gathering of the world’s largest economies.

“I can confirm that I have also received an unambiguous invitation from the UK prime minister to participate in the G20,” Tusk said. He noted that while this year’s summit is taking place in the United States, next year’s event will be hosted by Britain.

“I received confirmation that Poland will be invited and I will be able to personally participate in this summit,” the Polish premier added.

Indian support for permanent membership

During his visit to New Delhi, Tusk also spoke about discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding Poland’s aspirations for permanent G20 status. The Polish leader said he was “pleasantly surprised” by Modi’s declaration that India would not only support Poland’s permanent presence in the G20, but was also delighted about Poland’s participation in this year’s summit.

“Half-jokingly, we said to each other that we will do everything to sit next to each other at the G20 and support each other mutually,” Tusk remarked.

About the G20

Established in 1999, the G20 brings together 19 of the world’s largest national economies – including the USA, Germany, France, China, Japan, India and Russia – plus the European Union and, since 2023, the African Union. Member states account for approximately 85 per cent of global GDP and over 75 per cent of world trade.

The group operates without formal legal criteria for membership selection and has no permanent structures, making invitations to non-member countries diplomatically significant.

This year’s G20 summit is scheduled for 14-15 December in Miami, Florida, and will be hosted by US President Donald Trump.

What this means for Poles in the UK

Poland’s participation in the G20 strengthens its economic and diplomatic standing on the world stage, which can have practical implications for the Polish diaspora in Britain. A closer relationship between Poland and the UK through such high-level forums may facilitate smoother bilateral agreements on trade, labour mobility and investment.

For the estimated 700,000 Poles living in the UK, stronger Polish representation in global economic governance could translate into better advocacy for the concerns of EU nationals post-Brexit, particularly regarding work rights, pension transfers and recognition of qualifications. The UK hosting the 2026 summit also signals continued British engagement with European partners, including Poland, despite leaving the European Union.

Those interested in following Poland’s international diplomatic activities can monitor announcements from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UK Foreign Office for updates on bilateral cooperation emerging from such forums.
