Budget airline closes bag-drop desks 20 minutes earlier from November in bid to ease security queues

Ryanair passengers will have less time to check in hold luggage at the airport under new rules taking effect from 10 November. The airline is closing check-in and bag-drop desks 60 minutes before scheduled departure, compared to the current 40-minute cut-off, according to Bankier.pl.

The change applies across all airports served by the Irish budget carrier. In practice, for a flight departing at noon, the bag-drop facility will close at 11:00 rather than 11:20 as previously.

Ryanair says the move is designed to give passengers more time to clear security and passport control, reducing the risk of missing flights due to queues at checkpoints. The airline estimates that around 20 per cent of its customers check in hold luggage or use airport desks, meaning the remaining 80 per cent who check in online and travel with cabin bags only will not be directly affected.

Self-service kiosks rolling out

Alongside the stricter deadlines, Ryanair is expanding its network of self-service bag-drop kiosks. The carrier has pledged to install the machines at more than 95 per cent of the airports it operates from by the end of October 2026.

The kiosks integrate with the Ryanair mobile app, allowing travellers to print luggage tags and complete the bag-drop process more quickly without waiting for staff assistance. The airline hopes the technology will streamline operations and offset some of the inconvenience caused by the earlier closing times.

What this means for Poles in the UK

The new check-in window will have a direct impact on Polish passengers flying to and from the UK on Ryanair, particularly those travelling on routes to Poland with hold luggage—common during holiday visits or family trips involving gifts and supplies.

From 10 November, if you are checking in a suitcase at the airport, you must allow at least one hour before your scheduled departure time to drop off your bag. This is 20 minutes earlier than before, so last-minute dashes to the airport are riskier than ever. The rule applies whether you fly from London Stansted, Luton, East Midlands or any other Ryanair destination.

If you typically check in online and travel with cabin baggage only, the change will not affect you directly. However, security and passport queues may still cause delays, so arriving well ahead of boarding time remains essential.

It is also important to remember that the bag-drop cut-off is separate from boarding time. Check your booking confirmation and allow extra buffer time, especially at busy airports or during peak travel periods such as Christmas, Easter and summer holidays. For the most up-to-date information on your specific flight, consult the Ryanair app or website before you leave home.
