Emilie Dequenne died on Sunday in one of the hospitals in Paris – the family of the Belgian actress informed. The cause of the death of the 43-year-old was adrenal cortex cancer. The actress informed the public about the disease in October 2023. This is a rare type of malignant tumor, it is estimated that it affects one per million people annually.
On February 4, in one of her last posts on Instagram, Dequenne referred to her fight against cancer. “Today World Day of fighting cancer. I almost forgot about it, because today I leave the hospital after 13 days. What a hard fight it was! And we don't choose it. Just writing these few words is a huge effort for me” – she wrote.
Emilie Dequenne is dead
Emilie Dequenne was born in 1981 in Beloeil, Belgium. In 1999, only 17-year-old Dequenne for her role in the film “Rosetta” directed by the Dardenne brothers won the award for the best leading actress at the Cannes film festival.
The role of an impulsive girl, who lives with her mother, alcoholic, ready for everything to get a job, initiated Emilie Dequenne's career. In the following years she performed the main in French -speaking films. Her roles in the films “Our Children”, “Wilków Brotherhood” or “Don't worry, I am fine” (currently on the screens of Polish cinemas) brought great popularity.
Dequenne hosted at the Cannes festival in 2024 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her triumph on it, and to promote the English horror “Final Day”, in which her main role was given. It was the last film in which she played before the disease forced her to stop her work.
