Sweden will deploy approximately one hundred soldiers and a Patriot air defence system to eastern Poland starting in December to protect a critical NATO logistics hub near the border with Ukraine, according to Polsat News.

The Swedish contingent will defend the Rzeszów-Jasionka area against ballistic missiles, drones and other potential threats from Russia. Stockholm has described the operation as one of the most complex missions it has ever undertaken within NATO. The deployment is scheduled to begin on 1 December.

Paweł Zalewski, deputy minister of national defence, confirmed the mission during an interview with Polsat News, noting that Sweden had declared its readiness some time ago to support NATO’s logistics operation for Ukraine. He said Poland had waited for Sweden to make the official announcement first.

“This is very strong support for the entire communications hub, which is absolutely crucial from the point of view of Ukraine’s defence,” Zalewski said. “Over 90 per cent of aid for Ukraine passes through this hub in Rzeszów-Jasionka. Poland plays a key role in this context.”

Strategic importance of Rzeszów hub

The Rzeszów-Jasionka node processes 18,000 tonnes of equipment each month destined for Ukraine, making it one of the most vital components of NATO’s support network. The facility has been protected since the start of operations due to its strategic significance.

Zalewski emphasised that safeguarding such critical infrastructure has become increasingly important as Russian forces demonstrate willingness to escalate military actions not only in Ukraine but also through sabotage operations against NATO member states.

Part of rotation among NATO allies

The Swedish deployment follows earlier protection provided by other NATO partners. The United States initially stationed forces at the hub, followed by rotations involving British, German and Dutch personnel. Zalewski stressed that supporting Ukraine is an allied operation, not solely an American responsibility.

“After the Americans, the British took over their duties, then the Germans, the Dutch, and now it will be the Swedes,” he explained. “This is good because it shows an even distribution of responsibilities among all countries that possess such capabilities. Unfortunately, the number of such countries in Europe is limited.”

Sweden’s contribution reflects the country’s deepening integration into NATO following its accession to the alliance. The deployment of Patriot systems demonstrates Stockholm’s commitment to collective defence and its willingness to take on demanding operational roles within the alliance structure.

What this means for Poles in Poland

The Swedish deployment reinforces security in south-eastern Poland at a time of heightened tensions along NATO’s eastern flank. For residents of the Rzeszów area and surrounding regions, the presence of additional NATO forces and advanced air defence systems provides enhanced protection against potential spillover from the war in Ukraine or Russian sabotage attempts.

The Rzeszów-Jasionka hub has become a focal point of NATO activity in Poland, handling the vast majority of military aid flowing to Ukraine. While this strategic importance brings economic benefits to the region through increased military and logistics activity, it also makes the area a potential target for Russian aggression or hybrid operations.

Poles living near the hub should be aware that the deployment of Patriot systems and foreign troops is part of NATO’s defensive posture and does not signal an imminent threat. The mission underscores Poland’s central role in supporting Ukraine and maintaining collective security across the alliance. Polish authorities continue to monitor security around critical infrastructure, and residents can expect an ongoing multinational military presence as allied nations rotate through protective duties at the site.
