Holiday destinations want to fight the excess of tourists not only with fees, but also… the most common barriers. The Italian island of Capri wants to fence off the arrivals. Recently, the island's authorities presented the idea of placing a barrier with 40 buoys on a 6-kilometer section, 100 meters from its western shore.

Capri is one of the most picturesque and recognizable Italian islands, whose charms people from all over the world want to discover, sometimes even for a day. And unfortunately, as is the case with other popular tourist destinations, Capri is also starting to notice the inconveniences associated with overtourism.

The arriving boats with guests and the moored yachts are starting to become a real nuisance. That is why the island's rulers recently came up with the idea to curb this practice a bit.

Barrier for yachts

As reported by “The Telegraph”, the mayor of the Italian island has proposed a solution that will soon prevent pleasure boats and yachts from approaching too close to the island's shores. The mayor came up with the idea of placing a barrier of 40 buoys along a 6-kilometer stretch at a distance of 100 meters from the western shore of Capri. This solution is supposed to slightly reduce the influx of tourists, especially those who visit the island only as part of one-day trips. According to the British daily, “in May and June, the island is visited by 16,000 foreigners, while there are 13,000 residents.”

The solution, which probably won't come into effect before 2025, has both its supporters and opponents. Its implementation could prove particularly painful for boat operators. Hoteliers and restaurateurs also have some reservations about it. Although they see the problem of “one-day” guests, they believe that the influx of tourists should be managed more effectively and systematically.

“Residents forced to move”

“Capri is becoming a hostel for tourists and locals are being forced to leave. More people are arriving than we can handle, families cannot afford to stay. The government must take urgent action to protect the community and the future of the island,” Teodorico Boniello, head of the local consumer association, told The Telegraph.
