The city has announced changes to Park and Ride Połczyńska. There will be new plantings, benches and retention tanks. According to the officials, the parking lot is to be a place of recreation and relaxation. Is this realistic? We will find out in 2027, when the investment is planned to be completed.
Based on the city's agreement with the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, the P+R Połczyńska parking lot will be adapted to climate change. EU funds will cover more than half of the costs of modernizing the facility.
– This will be a big change in the area of the current car park and the first investment of this type in the city. The project assumes that almost half of the area of the facility, i.e. 1.4 hectares, will be made available as a place of recreation and relaxation. Residents will benefit from this especially on Saturdays and Sundays, when the car park practically does not fulfill its basic function. Therefore, there will be no classic fencing here, and the area itself will be open, among others, to residents of nearby housing estates – says Maciej Fijałkowski, Secretary of Warsaw, quoted in the press release.
Permeable surface, 50 new trees
According to the Warsaw City Hall, most of the work related to the modernization of the parking lot will focus on giving it a more ecological character. “Part of the concrete surface of the facility will be changed to one that allows water to pass through. A system for managing rainwater and meltwater will be built. Three retention reservoirs will be created, including one open for recreational purposes. The water collected in the reservoirs will be used, among other things, for watering plants,” officials enumerate.
In addition, 50 new trees, about a thousand shrubs and half a thousand vines will be planted. There will also be a publicly accessible garden with educational paths and benches. “In total, the green infrastructure built or modernized to adapt to climate change will cover almost 2.4 hectares,” the city hall indicates.
Energy self-sufficient parking lot
The car park will feature wooden structures lined with plant carpets and covered with photovoltaic panels. “The new eco-car park will be equipped with an energy management system, which will include an industrial electricity storage facility, and the lighting will be replaced with energy-saving lighting. People who leave their cars and bikes in the car park will gain ten charging points for electric vehicles. During normal operation, the car park will not need any energy from the grid – it will only need solar power, which will power an installation with a capacity of approx. 100 kW,” informs the city hall.
As part of the P+R investment at Połczyńska, it will be connected to the Parking Management Center, which will improve, among other things, the control and management of installations and devices.
The documentation is ready, now the tender for the contractor is underway
Officials indicate that the documentation needed to start work is ready, including a building permit. The next step will be to announce a tender to select a contractor. The signing of the construction contract is planned for the turn of this year and next year, and the investment is to be completed in 2027.
“As part of the project implementation, information and promotional activities will also be carried out, including: meetings with residents (e.g. regarding adaptation to climate change), information paths (the park part of the area will feature equipment with educational boards that will mark an educational path on climate change)” – explains the town hall.
The total value of the investment is over PLN 40 million.
