There are concerns about the fate of the Puck Island in Szczecin. The place is located on a depression, so the risk of flooding is very high. Residents do not want to give up, they already have their own warning system. They constantly check the embankments. They claim that they are prepared for the wave flowing on the Odra River. Material from the “Poland and World” magazine. The entire edition is available on TVN24 GO.

Although flooding is still being taken into account, the inhabitants of Puck Island, accustomed to frequent flooding, remain calm. – The worst medicine is panic. If we scare each other, nothing will come of it. We promise, we will control the water from the west – says Elżbieta Flis, chairwoman of the MiÄ™dzyodrze Wyspa Pucka Housing Estate council.

The island is separated from the rest of Szczecin by two branches of the Oder and the Odyniec Canal. This place is surrounded by embankments and located on a depression. – Everyone is organized here. They are flooded very often, because this is the effect of very frequent backwater – says the West Pomeranian Voivode, Adam Rudawski.

It is therefore not surprising that the inhabitants have even developed their own early warning system and constantly monitor the embankments. – We are more afraid of the retreat every year than of the wave that is coming now. We have an embankment on the western side, where the worst threat is – says Elżbieta Flis, who has lived on Pucka Island for 40 years.

The embankments were modernized in 2014. They are reinforced and sealed, the so-called Larsen walls, preventing water penetration. However, the residents of the marina located in front of the embankments, in the flood area, are in a worse situation.

Piotr Zalewa, a member of the board of the marina board of the PZW “Kolejarz” association, shows a trace of winter flooding on the garage door. – This is one of the traces that shows the water level that we had not so long ago, in the winter of this year. I hope it's not higher, he says.

Concerns about flooding of Puck Island

For marina residents, along with a beautiful view of the water comes the risk of flooding the house and street. Some people use this place only for recreation, others live here all year round.

The island's inhabitants are only a small part of the local community. Only 280 people are registered, but up to 5,000 live there – the services must remember all of them during a possible evacuation.

Nobody here forgets about animals. – We accepted the gifts. We are trying to send it quickly before the expected wave, says Kinga Baranowska, an animal shelter volunteer. – After giving the gifts, we fight and secure our property – he adds.

– When it's all over, when the water passes, we will be able to meet here again and sing to ourselves that we have it, this is our island, our enclave – says Elżbieta Flis. The coming hours will give an answer as to what part of it can be defended.
