Marcin Romanowski did not appear at the meeting of the Rules Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe regarding his case – Maciej Sokołowski, TVN24 correspondent in Brussels, reported on Tuesday morning. A member of parliament from the PiS club asked for the hearing to be postponed, but the committee did not agree to this request. The debate and vote on the politician's immunity will take place on Wednesday afternoon.

TVN24 correspondent in Brussels Maciej Sokołowski reported on Tuesday after 8.30 that the meeting of the Rules Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe had begun, during which Marcin Romanowski was to be heard.

As he said, the politician did not appear at the meeting. – He sent an e-mail to the committee members that he had returned to Poland to translate documents that he wanted to submit to the Council of Europe and asked for the hearing to be postponed and another date set. According to him, he was notified about the meeting too late and did not have time to prepare, Sokołowski said.

He added that the committee ended the meeting after 10 minutes. It did not agree to Romanowski's request and did not set another date for the hearing.

– Members of the Commission admit that Marcin Romanowski was given a chance to speak, but he did not take advantage of it. He could have appointed someone to represent his position at the hearing, but he chose not to do so. He could also connect remotely because the Commission was prepared for an online hearing, Sokołowski said.

The TVN24 correspondent added that the commission continues to work in accordance with its procedures and will meet as scheduled at 2 p.m. to accept the report on immunity. – The report was prepared at night and is now being completed – he said.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will debate and vote on stripping Marcin Romanowski of his immunity on Wednesday afternoon. The request to waive the immunity was submitted there on Sunday by Prosecutor General Adam Bodnar.

Charges against Marcin Romanowski

On July 16, the District Court for Warsaw-Mokotów did not agree to the arrest of Romanowski – a politician of Sovereign Poland, a member of the club PIS and former deputy head of the Ministry of Justice due to the immunity of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The National Prosecutor's Office then filed a complaint against this decision, but on September 27 The District Court in Warsaw upheld the decision of the first instance court in this case.

Then, the spokesman for the National Prosecutor's Office, Przemysław Nowak, announced that in the coming days the prosecutor's office would submit a request to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to waive the immunity of MP Romanowski.

Marcin Romanowski – politician of Sovereign Poland, MP of the PiS club, who in 2019-2023 was the deputy head of the Ministry of Justice supervising the Justice Fund – the suspect is, among others, about setting up competitions for money from this fund. The charges against him include the amount of over PLN 112,126,000. zloty.
