The commune of Jablanica, located southwest of the capital Sarajevo, where fatalities were reported, was completely cut off from the world. As a result of the flood, roads, bridges and railway tracks were destroyed.
Bosnian Civil Defense reported that between 20 and 40 people were missing. These people were trapped under the rubble or carried away by flood waters.
Destroyed houses
Edin Forto, Minister of Transport of the Bosnian-Croat Federation, said the situation in the flood-affected areas was critical.
– The element tore out entire houses from the ground, along with concrete slabs and foundations. I've never seen anything like this, Forto said.
Some houses were completely razed to the ground by landslides. The government has declared a state of disaster in the flood-affected areas and established a crisis committee to help alleviate the situation.
